More Than Just a Home: My Journey as Chair of Fairoak Housing
When I joined Fairoak Housing Association as non-executive chair, I knew I was stepping into something special. Fairoak provides specialised supported housing for adults with autism and learning disabilities across Cumbria and the North East, with a mission that speaks directly to my core belief: that a safe, secure home can make all the difference to someone’s ability to thrive in life.
The Power of Home
The tenant testimonials on Fairoak’s website capture this beautifully. One tenant shared: “Living in a Fairoak property gives me a sense of security in knowing I have a home. A sense of belonging within a community. It stabilised me after I went through a very difficult and traumatic time.”
These stories remind me daily why this work matters. A good home isn’t just about four walls – it’s about creating the foundation from which people can build meaningful lives with as much autonomy as possible.
The Power of Connection
Working with a small housing organisation means I get to interact closely with the dedicated staff and meet some of our tenants (who’ve kindly told me I’m their favourite board member!) As someone who works largely independently as an executive coach, being part of this team over several years has been incredibly rewarding.
Beyond Housing: Building Community
A good life isn’t just about having a good home – it’s about purpose, community, and connection. That’s why the Friends of Fairoak charity exists, raising funds for activities that go beyond accommodation. Recently, the team has arranged outward bound weekends, bowling trips, and adventures to Blackpool – opportunities for our tenants to have fun, build friendships and engage with their wider communities.
Supporting What Matters
The supported housing sector faces significant challenges, particularly given the current economic climate and the crucial link between good housing and quality care provision. But organisations like Fairoak prove that with dedication, creativity, and community support, we can continue making a real difference.
That’s why I’m offering a limited number of executive coaching sessions in return for donations to Friends of Fairoak. I could embark on a huge physical sponsored challenge, but I’ve always been a great believer to playing to your strengths, so this makes a lot more sense to me! Either way, I want to support the team’s fantastic efforts and help raise funds for more of these meaningful activities that transform lives.
Because ultimately, that’s what Fairoak is about – not just providing homes, but creating the conditions for people to flourish, connect, and live their best lives. And I couldn’t be prouder to be part of that mission.
